Big Week!

We had a very exciting day yesterday! First one of our class mates arrived on a tank! This story made the front page of the Dominion post too. Then we went down to the hall and saw a show called Iron Brian. This was put on for us by the Beef and Lamb people and they even made us a Yummy burger when the show was over! Below are two slide shows to show you what we got up to yesterday. Also you can click the link to read the article about Caitlin and Connor in the paper.

Keep an eye out for posts on our Jump Rope for Heart tomorrow afternoon and for our visit to Harold on Thursday and Friday! Wow! What a week!

Frog Week!

This week has been frog week. Last week we read a non-fiction book about Tadpoles. It was brilliant timing because it taught us some things about frogs! So for homework we had to design a frog tank. We got some information from a website. If you want to have a look, here is the link. NZ Frogs

Mrs Wells told us that it was frog week and that some frogs were endangered. She told us a story about her own frogs. 2 went in the dirt to hibernate, but only 1 came out. We learnt from that, that bigger frogs eat little frogs! Even if they are only a little bit different in size. So we reflected on this and thought that we must not have two different sized frogs in the same tank!

Bradley's Mum brought in their own frogs from home. There was a froglet, a tadpole and a frog! He had all the right stuff in the tank to keep them safe and happy! His mum even caught flies and a moth, to put in there for them to eat!

Here are some photos of the frog visit! And also some of our tank designs.

Term 3 and Father's Day

Well we are coming to the close of term 3! Man this year is flying by fast. We have had a very busy term with production, but it all paid off this week with 3 amazing performances. There will be writing and pictures coming soon. We also made some lovely Father's Day cards using a cool site called bighugelabs.com. It was quite fun and I hear the Dad's loved them. Here are the pictures we made.

(If we have any shy Dad's out there I will happily remove the pictures of them - just let me know!)

Term 3

Welcome back!

We are half way through the year now and we have all come back taller and smarter after our 2 week break. We have our brand new principal (who is ours now to keep for a while) and he is neat. (He even took us for a bit this afternoon!)

We have some new work for you to read (and comment on how cool it is) in the Children's work Post further down the page, or if you click in the May link down in the Organiser on the right hand side you will see the link.

We have production this term as well and Mrs Cox has had auditions and put up the cast list in the window at school and the whole student body is very excited! Even some of us wee guys have named parts for dancing, singing and acting! We will keep you posted on that.

Oh and of course we have moved!!!! Even though our blog is Alcove 4, we know get called Room 5! We have had an adventure last term! Our Junior Syndicate was bursting with gorgeous children so because we were the biggest and the bravest, we moved to a new block. We are still in the Kowhai Syndicate, but we have new neighbours from Nikau. They have made us very welcome and even invited us in to hear their work. (They are pretty clever really!)

Children's Work

Here are some stories written by the children. We did a lot of talking together and planning of our story along the format of another story called "3 Wishes". They were aloud to change the characters and the situations, but they had to follow the same pattern of events. These children did this very well and used some great language features to enhance their writing. I hope you enjoy them and can leave some nice feedback.

Well here it is!!! Hot off the press, here are some of the finished re-written "Jack and the Beanstalk" stories. We have worked very hard on these stories. They are based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, but we have changed a few things. We have written them according to the way we want you to read them as we have learnt a few tricks about reading with expression this term. So here are our stories. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we have enjoyed writing them.

Term 2

Well, we all made it back from our holidays and we are "diving head first" into term 2. Literally! We are swimming twice a week this term, and having heaps of fun! We are also doing PMP (Perpetual Motor Skills) so by Friday afternoon, we are all very ready for our social, low key afternoon of Developmental.

Unfortunately we did not win the Hurricanes competition, but the winners were from down the road, so it's not too bad.

We will keep you posted with what is happening this term. Keep an eye out for our updates.

Hurricanes

Alcove 4 have gone Hurricane crazy. We heard on More FM that we could decorate our classroom in Hurricanes colours, and the best class gets a visit from the boys!

Here is a photo of some of us. Check out another photo of us on their web site. You can also keep an eye on the competition!

Links

Here is the link to the site to make the Tiger enclosure. Sorry for the wrong address! It is a fantastic site to investigate with your children!

This site is also a way of getting more ICT into the classroom. In developmental we had a play on this site Art Rage. It is a free download for Macs and PC, so does not have all the tools, but it is a neat way to draw on the computer. Have fun and explore. Click on the image below.

I hope that those of you who down loaded art rage have had fun. Another link that I have found is Fun Brain. It is filled with educational games (but the ones from edalive are great too, and raise money for our school).

FUN BRAIN LINK

I know that we have some High School Musical Fans out there. I am going to the stage show myself. I thought that you might like to have a look at some of the vidoe clips (if you don't have the DVD already) They are off you tube and there are some aspects of this site that may need parental supervision.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

Also there are links to Hi 5 as I know we have fans of that in Alcove 4 too. SO have a look and then you can search for your other favourites too.

Hi 5
Here is a link to an Astronomy site for kids. We have had a look at it with the Syndicate the other week, so have a play with your children.

Easter Hunt

Easter is on it's way and the Easter Bunny is in training! He contacted Mrs Pepperell at our school and asked if we could help him. He said that he would race around and deliver eggs for the Kowhai children and we would rush around and find them. He chose the Kowhai children because he knew they were good at sharing! He asked if the children could find all the eggs and put them in the basket, and then each child would be able to have one, even if they couldn't find one! Have a look at our slide show. It shows a sneak peak at how we got on!

Welcome

Hi to all our family and friends,

This is Alcove 4's Blog. We are a year 2 class in Wellington New Zealand. We do heaps of neat things in our class and this is a cool way for us to share them with our best friends and families that may live far away!
